Dormitories for technical intern trainees from Southeast Asia. To ensure that the housing does not create a sense of isolation for the interns, who are often not yet used to life in Japan, the design allows for the presence of neighbors to be sensed. A central element of the architecture is the light garden, which ties together the units, takes in natural light, and creates a shared area for residents to circulate through. The garden, a low-cost measure, is in the center of the building plan and also host the doma (multi-purpose earthen floor space in Japanese homes) and the laundry terrace. These living areas are created within each plan, and by loosely connecting them together, the residents can feel a sense of relationship with others.
