Reinterpreting the Garden of Happo-en
This project is the renewal of Happo-en, a site known for its Japanese garden that has existed for nearly 400 years since the Edo period. In response to changes brought about by the COVID-19 pandemic, the facility’s focus— previously centered on weddings—expanded to include MICE functions, leading to the conversion of the fifth and sixth floors of the main building into spaces for this purpose. A detailed investigation of the existing structure confirmed records of seismic retrofitting and application for building confirmation, allowing the conversion to proceed within a scope that does not fall under “major alterations" while making use of the existing building. The project can also be understood as an attempt to reinterpret the garden from a contemporary perspective.
This project is also an attempt to reinterpret, from a contemporary perspective, the garden that has been shaped over a long period of time since its origin, when the first owner, Fusanosuke Kuhara, was drawn to a single pine tree and chose this site.Descending from the main gate toward the main building, a corridor running alongside the garden leads visitors into the lobby, from which the garden unfolds broadly below. The aim was to create a place where the charm of this historic garden can be experienced in a manner suited to the present day.
