Nestled within the deep greenery of a Japanese garden in the heart of Tokyo, this chapel stands quietly, as if breathing with the landscape itself. An old Western-style chapel once occupied this place, but the new design sought to let architecture gently dissolve into the garden. The building follows the bowl-shaped terrain, its concrete roof stretching like an extension of the earth. The outer walls, replacing the former retaining structure, bind the building and the garden into one continuous form. At its center, a reflecting pool receives soft light from an oval skylight above, where the shadows of leaves and wind ripple across the surface. When it rains, the sloped roof gathers water, letting it flow back into the garden — evoking the image of a natural spring. The cave-like space recalls the dry landscape of Ryōan-ji, while the elliptical pool lends a quiet baroque rhythm. The gentle curvature of the roof echoes the “sori” of traditional Japanese architecture. In this place where light, water, and prayer intertwine, one finds a profound stillness within the heart of the city.
