This book focuses on the design processes of seven architects, each focusing on a single project, through the thorough description of their individual approaches towards design.
In this work, I reflected on the design philosophy of Long House with an Engawa through discussions of the nature of architecture as sacred space and archetype, as well as concepts like “ikata” (mode of being in place) and “bricolage.” The book incorporates fragments of project models and drawings, as well as records of objects and events created by the people who inhabit the architecture, weaving the elements together to illustrate the building’s design process.
Traveling to gain inspiration for the project, building models in the studio to integrate the structure with its site, grappling with the intricate relationships between objects—these are moments when my sense of self dissolves, I am integrated with the flow of time, and decisions seem to emerge almost unconsciously. I hope that through this book, readers can experience the feeling of such a design process.

本書では「52間の縁側」について、人々に愛される建築や聖なる場所の姿・アーキタイプ(祖型)としての建築のあり方・「居方」や「ブリコラージュ」といったアイデアを通じて、その設計思想を語ることを試みた。そしてそれらの中に「52間の縁側」の模型写真やドローイングの断片を、また現地で人々が生み出してきたモノや出来事をその中に織り交ぜ、この建築の設計プロセスを示そうとした。
旅に出てプロジェクトのイメージを得ること、アトリエで模型を作って敷地に建物を馴染ませること、モノとモノとの取り合いに格闘すること、そうしたやるべきことに夢中になっていくときに、”私”という意識が消失し、長い時間の流れの中に入り込み、半ば無意識的に物事を決めている時がある。本書を通じ、そのような設計のプロセスで抱く感覚を感じてもらえたら嬉しい。
