THE CRITICAL HOUSE

This book documented criticality in housing, drawing from the late 20th-century “discourse of criticality” regarding residential architecture in Japan. It includes interviews with 20 architects from various generations, along with essays reflecting on the role of criticality in contemporary architecture.
In my works—whether designing housing, daycare centers, nurseries, hospices, or other buildings—I have always sought to ground architecture as a “dwelling,” stripping away function from spaces and creating environments akin to a relaxed living room. It is also to implement the architectural form that creates a more vibrant habitat for people. The experience of such spaces inspires social change, like inviting conversation or fostering love for others. At the same time, this approach critiques the efficiency-driven design of “facilities” and the commodification of housing, which often deprive people of their autonomy and the opportunity for coexistence. As one of the interviewees, I contributed an essay titled “Forms for Vibrant Spaces,” where I discuss these ideas and practices through past projects.
