Nishimagome / Restaurant

This project is a Japanese restaurant in Nishimagome where the shopping street has a nostalgic atmosphere. There are several Sushi and Yakitori restaurants where the people of this neighborhood get together and enjoy not only eating but also chatting with their friends. This is the way of life in this neighborhood. The method we considered to be the best suited for this project was “coexistence” with other restaurants rather than “competition” in this area. We wanted to increase the choices that people have when eating out. Therefore we aimed to create a restaurant where guests can dress up a little when going there.

When entering, guests go inside through a narrow tunnel which opens into an interior designed using “Nodate”. “Nodate” is an old traditional part of Japanese culture where people enjoy tea ceremony in the open-air. A folding screen is used instead of a “Tea House” to create the space. There are two tables with lights set into them inside a small seating area. We designed a new wall finished with a textile. We likened the wall to a “Byobu” or a Japanese folding screen. In addition, we set several lights between the new and existing concrete walls. Our principle is to maintain a minimalistic design.
